Battlefield Bad Company 2 is a Born Leader
08/Mar/2010

‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ explodes into the All Formats Chart at No1 this week, honouring EA with the accolade of being the fastest selling game of the year so far.

‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ has an excellent performance, outselling the launch week of the original ‘Bad Company’ by almost 3 to 1. It also records the best ever launch for any game released this early in the year. 53% of sales went to the Xbox 360 version with 31% for PS3 and 16% for PC, topping each individual chart. Last week’s No1 ‘Heavy Rain’ slips to No4 with sales down 69% and with ‘Aliens Vs Predator’ (-61%) falling one place to No3, ‘Just Dance’ (-15%) finds itself back at No2. Sales of ‘Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing’ (+28%) speed up in their second week, propelling it from No8 to No5, ahead of ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-5%), which drops 2 places to No6. The usual suspects fill the remaining positions in the Top 10 with ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (-11%) and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-15%) both down 2 places to No’s 7 and 8 respectively.

‘FIFA 10’ (-13%) has never been out of the Top 10 since its release and it does not look like it wants this to change, gaining one place this week, up from No10 to No9. ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-41%) manages to hold onto a Top 10 finish, despite falling 3 places to No10. The launch of the PC version of ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (+73%) sees it jump from No31 to No14, while there is a new entry at No23 for Square-Enix’s PC strategy title ‘Supreme Commander 2’.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 tops UK software charts
Posted Mar 8, 2010 at 2:27PM by Glenn M.

There's so much Battlefield: Bad Company 2 right now that servers are overwhelmed with the mass of players wanting to take their fragging online. To no surprise at all, the latest GFK Chart Track has the FPS sitting on number one.

Here's the top ten in the UK for the week ending March 6th.
http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp& ct=110015

With this result, Bad Company 2 outsells its predecessor's week one launch by nearly 3 to 1. The sales break down to 53% for its Xbox 360 version, while it's 31% for the PS3 and 16% for the PC version. Similarly, the game also tops sales on each of those platforms for this period.

The previous week's #1, Heavy Rain, slides to #4, while Ubisoft's Just Dance continues to dance up and down the charts. The older big names, like Modern Warfare 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, see some small slides down.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Issues Being Addressed
Mon, Mar 8th, 2010, 10:25 pm (EST) by Shawn

After having some initial trouble over the weekend resulting in server outages, it appears that Battlefield: Bad Company 2's online servers will be coming back online. The issue affected the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 versions of the game.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a sequel to the original Battlefield: Bad Company, which features an extended version of the original game's engine, which allows for the game's environment to be fully destructible, For example, this allowed buildings to fully collapse instead of just having sections of the wall blown out.

Even though the original issue was resolved over the weekend, EA and DICE worked worked earlier today to add new optimizations to the servers to alleviate the extra server load, which according to the publisher was "400% higher" in simultaneously online users than in any other previous title in the series.

The PC and PlayStation 3 version were the least affected, with small outages here and there. The Xbox 360 version was the most severely impacted. All versions should be back online and will be closely monitored for any future events, according to EA.

PC Gaming is Still Quite Alive

On Friday, DICE mentioned in a forum post that PC gamers playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2 had exceeded both PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers. This is something interesting to consider because many PC gamers are also console gamers, including myself. This achievement may indicate that perhaps PC gamers are running in droves to the PC version because of the fact that it has features that many console games lack. And that many gamers who relegated to playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on consoles because it was basically a console port had switched back to PC to play Bad Company 2.

Level of detail in PC versions of the game are quite extraordinary, especially if you own DirectX 11 graphics card.

I believe that this shows that PC gamers can still make a game profitable and popular if you make a good game. It has made me sick to see developers constantly shying away from PC titles or making titles console exclusive simply because the profit models were more profitable on consoles. I’m fairly aware of the fact that this is an opinionated statement, but I know for a fact that I share a common feeling between PC gamers that we feel abandoned. If this game’s popularity is any indication, game developers who actually bother to make a game that plays well on PC and at least makes an effort to cater to PC gamers will be very well rewarded with loyalty and sales.

Also, for those interested, DICE took a very subtle jab at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 mentioning "pussy heart beat monitors" in one of the game’s cut scenes clearly making a jab at Modern Warfare 2. I personally found this chuckle worthy and figured that it fit in very well with DICE/EA’s marketing campaign constantly comparing it to Modern Warfare 2.

Personally, I’ve almost finished the single player and I’m currently leveling back up in the Multiplayer and I can tell you that this was a much more enjoyable experience than playing Modern Warfare 2. I miss my vehicles and real teamwork. We will be doing a full review of the game in the near future. Also, as a note, Bad Company 2 did initially have quite a few server errors when playing online, but as of recently they all appear to have been fixed and all parts of the game seem to be working smoothly.

Needless to say, there are a lot of happy FPS gamers out there.
